I saw an amazing documentary last night. It's called The Fog of War. It's about the major lessons that Robert S. McNamara learned while serving as Secretary of Defense under two Presidents (JFK and LBJ).
McNamara is one of the more controversial figures in recent US history, but whether you love him or hate him you have to admit he is a fascinating individual. There's just something about him that is intriguing. He has the rare combination of charisma, brilliance, and vulnerability that makes you want to listen to what he has to say (whether you believe him or not). I'd like to learn more about him, so if anyone knows of any good books on him would you let me know?
Besides the fascinating subject matter, the music, editing/pacing, and general format made this one of the best (if not the best) documentaries I've ever seen. Even if you're not into history I'm sure many of you will appreciate it for its cinematic value. Those of you who aren't into history or cinema may still appreciate the film as a study in human nature. Basically, I can't think of many people who wouldn't enjoy this movie.
The lessons that McNamara learned are particularly relevant right now considering the parallels between our current situation in Iraq and what we did in Vietnam in the '60s and '70s. I would suggest everyone check it out.
